The B2 had something to make up for against the training combination from Tilburg and Waalwijk, who lost 5-3 in the outward round after a bizarre match sequence. PSV played an excellent first half and expressed the difference in strength fittingly in a very comfortable half-time score. The match was only 5 minutes into it when midfielder Steven Bergwijn made it 2-0 in a span of just a few minutes with 2 fine goals. The score was brilliantly increased in the 22nd minute after a good action when left striker Youandi Renfrum was sent deep, cut inside and directed the ball into the right cross with a beautiful curve. According to the referee, the ball rebounded behind not via the crossbar behind the goal line but in front of it, so the beautiful goal was not awarded. Still, PSV made it 3-0 at halftime 2 minutes later, when right-wing striker Arnaut Groeneveld shot in tight from the right side.
Although coach Twan Scheepers stressed at halftime that it was important to stay focused and not slacken with the large lead in mind, that was exactly the picture the 2nd half showed, and so what absolutely should not happen with such a large lead happened. Willem II/RKC started the second half much brighter and took maximum advantage of the weakness on the PSV side. With commitment and experience, the guests managed to rectify the deficit within fifteen minutes after halftime with beautiful goals on top of that, the last two being made from sharp counters. And although PSV had a great chance for the winning goal 10 minutes before time when Matthias Verreth, after a nice attack, put the ball well down from the right for the incoming Youandi Renfurm, who shot wide via the goalkeeper, that would not have been deserved either, after giving away such an excellent lead as the B2 did.
A disappointing but hugely instructive game for PSV, which made it clear once again that the game is not played and won until the final signal has sounded.
