PSV head coach Phillip Cocu criticised his players for a poor first-half performance. “Our first half was not good”, admitted Cocu at the post-match conference.
Cocu told the media in the press room of the Philips Stadion that his side had lacked aggression. “Some players lacked the spark to break down the Vitesse defence in the first half and should have worked harder. I told them during the half-time team talk to make amends and that’s what they did.” Cocu thought PSV’s victory was well- deserved. “We were not at our best but a win is all that matters right now ahead of the international break. I was pleased with the way we scored the goal. Set pieces are a crucial part of the game and we practised hard in training all week. I am happy our game plan worked against Vitesse.”
Siem de Jong revealed after the match that the only goal of the game was scored from a corner taken short, practised in training. “I am pleased to have made my mark tonight. I hope to prove my value to the team in the remaining matches of the current season. I feel I can play the full 90 minutes again and that’s a good thing”, said Siem de Jong.
