The Dutch national team suffered a 1-0 defeat to Denmark in their opening Euro 2012 Group B match at Metalist Stadium, Kharkiv, on Saturday. PSV captain Mark van Bommel and his team mate Jetro Willem were both included in the starting line-up.“ We have dropped three valuable points, but we still have two Group B games on hand”, said Van Bommel.

The Netherlands dominated the game from the first whistle, putting pressure on the Denmark defence, but failed to convert their dominance into goals. Against the run of play, Denmark took the lead after 24 minutes. Simon Poulsen burst forward down the left and his cross found Krohn-Dehli. The Danish striker rounded John Heitinga before sending a low shot through the legs of keeper Maarten Stekelenburg.

Van Bommel: “A bit speechless”
Mark van Bommel was left a bit speechless after the Oranje had spurned a large number of chances in their 0-1 defeat against Denmark. “I don’t know if you can call this bad luck when you play like this and create so many chances”, said Van Bommel, speaking after the game. “We gave away just one chance and created plenty of opportunities ourselves. Yet we suffered a shock defeat. We can’t blame one player as four or five guys appeared in scoring positions. I am left a bit speechless; we have dropped three valuable points, but we still have two Group B games on hand." The Netherlands face Germany on Wednesday.“It is clear we have to beat Germany”, said Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk. “We created an improbable number of chances but if you fail to finish, then this happens. We showed that we can play good football and create chances, while we proved in the past that we can beat Germany.”

Mark van Bommel admitted after the game he was left a bit speechless. Mark van Bommel admitted after the game he was left a bit speechless.
