PSV record fine 1-3 win over FC Groningen

Hutchinson put PSV ahead

Tim Matavz returned to the starting line-up at the expense of Luciano Narsingh as PSV immediately put pressure on the FC Groningen defence. FC Groningen goalkeeper Luciano was called into action a number of times, pulling off saves to deny Willems, Matavz and Toivonen. At the other end, former PSV forward Género Zeefuik and Michael de Leeuw brought out good saves from PSV goalie Tyton. PSV deservedly took the lead in the 38th minute. Dries Mertens found Atiba Hutchinson with a clever through ball and the Canadian capped his 50th appearance for PSV with a fine lob over Luciano. FC Groningen pushed for an equaliser but Tyton made a finger tips save to deny a Bacuna free kick on the stroke of half-time.

Great second-half goals from Mertens and Depay

The home crowd urged FC Groningen on after the restart and Tyton was the busier of the two goalkeepers. But PSV stood firm and doubled their lead in the 72nd minute. FC Groningen defender Virgil van Dijk was robbed of the ball. Kevin Strootman sent a long ball into the path Dries Mertens, who controlled the pass well and scored with a clinical finish: 0-2. With six minutes remaining, Memphis Depay, who had replaced Mertens after 77 minutes, put the result beyond doubt with a peach of a goal. He started a superb mazy solo run that saw him evade some defenders and finish with a shot that Luciano could not stop: 0-3. Schet scored a consolation goal for the hosts in the 89th minute, as PSV bagged all three points at the Euroborg Stadium in Groningen.
