PSV recorded a convincing 5-1 win over AZ at the Philips Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Dick Advocaat’s team dominated the game. At half-time, it was all square (1-1), but Mark van Bommel, Marcelo, Tim Matavz and Atiba Hutchinson scored second-half goals to help their side to a fine 5-1 win. AZ were down to ten men after eight minutes, when Reijen was sent off.
Lighttown Madness fans unfurled a huge banner before kick-off.
Tim Matavz opened the scoring
PSV were settling down soon and seeing quite a lot of the ball against AZ, with Dries Mertens sending an effort just wide. AZ were reduced to ten men in the eighth minute when defender Etiënne Reijnen was already heading for an early bath after he had been shown two yellow cards in quick succession. PSV immediately made full use of their numerical advantage. Mertens curled in a precise free kick to put the ball on a plate for Matavz to convert and break the deadlock in the 11th minute. Although PSV made the brighter start, AZ got their leveller after 28 minutes when Adam Maher unleashed a long-range shot that went into the top corner: 1-1. The hosts went close on the stroke of half-time but AZ goalkeeper Esteban pulled off an excellent save to deny Marcelo’s header.

Four second-half goals
The second half continued in much the same vein as the first and PSV deservedly restored their lead nine minutes after the restart. Kevin Strootman teed up Mark van Bommel and PSV´s captain opened his scoring account for the season, beating Esteban with a vicious, low drive: 2-1. Hutchinson, Van Bommel and Matavz then had chances to give PSV a two-goal cushion, but it was Marcelo who capped his 100th appearance for PSV with a goal after 68 minutes, finding the net with a headed goal from a Dries Mertens corner: 3-1. Luciano Narsingh, who had replaced Jermaine Lens after 75 minutes, delivered a cross from the right that found Tim Matavz to nod home in the 83rd minute: 4-1. Atiba Hutchinson put the icing on the cake in the final minute of official time, rounding a defender and beating Esteban at his far post: 5-1. PSV have moved into third place with nine points from four games, ahead of the international break. They will resume league action on Sunday, September 16, when they face FC Utrecht at Stadion Galgenwaard in Utrecht (kick-off at 14.).
