PSV progress after win over Achilles’29
First half: poor start for PSV
PSV made a disappointing start to the game in Groesbeek and fell 1-0 behind after only one minute of play. Poor communication between Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jørgensen and goalkeeper Boy Waterman resulted in the 1-0 courtesy of former N.E.C. attacker Thijs Hendriks. PSV then started pushing for the equaliser and Jurgen Locadia, who replaced the ill Tim Matavz, restored parity in the 25th minute. PSV pressed for more after the 1-1 and netted two more times before the half-time whistle. First, Zanka made amends for his earlier mistake when he headed home the 1-2, which would be his final action of the game as he picked up a knock while scoring and was replaced by Marcelo. PSV then once more scored immediately after the entrance of the Brazilian. Memphis Depay again was the provider with a well-taken corner kick. This time Derijck found the net with a header at the near post to make it 1-3 at half-time.
Wijnaldum misses penalty
PSV were hunting for the 4-1 in the second half, but Marcelo, Depay and Locadia all failed to find the net. Achilles’29 even somewhat surprisingly pegged one back shortly after the hour-mark. Substitute Ivo Rigter added his name to the score-sheet after a good attack from the hosts. Georginio Wijnaldum then went to the ground inside the area after a tackle from an Achilles defender, prompting the referee to award PSV a penalty. The attacking midfielder stepped up to take it himself, but his attempt was kept out by Ditewig. The Groesbeek side started pushing forward in numbers in the closing stages of the game and came close to leveling the scoring on a number of occasions. However, they were unable to net a third goal, meaning that PSV qualified for the third round of the Dutch cup.
