“I can hardly believe it”

Georginio Gregion Emile Wijnaldum, 11 November 1990, was the youngest first-team Feyenoord player ever, when he made his debut in 2007, at the age of 16 and 148 days. He came through the youth ranks at Sparta Rotterdam and made 110 Eredivisie appearances for Feyenoord, scoring 22 goals in the process, 14 of them last season. “This is such a special day for me”, Wijnaldum told PSV TV. “I can still hardly believe it myself. I’m still young and think I can continue developing into a better player. That’s why I have decided to stay in Holland. PSV always play for the league title and I would like to be part of that.” Wijnaldum will wear PSV´s No10 shirt for the forthcoming season. “Just a number won’t make me a better player, but it shows the club’s appreciation.” PSV´s technical director Marcel Brands handed Wijnaldum the No10 shirt and then the new signing put pen to paper on his contract, in the presence of his grandmother. “My grandmother has always looked after me and I’m happy she’s here today. She’s always looked after me well and I’ve also given her the shirt I wore on my professional debut.”
