PSV beat ten-man FC Utrecht: 2-1
04 februari 2010 09:00
PSV stayed on top of the Eredivisie on Wednesday after beating ten-man FC Utrecht at the Philips Stadium. Toivonen and substitute Engelaar found the net on either side of the break in a 2-1 victory. FC Utrecht’s fierce resistance was finally broken when they were reduced to ten men, following the dismissal of defender Keller for two yellow cards.
The assist from Toivonen´s goal came from Dzsudzsák.
Toivonen scored his eleventh goal of the season
PSV kicked off their second game of the week, welcoming back Simons, with Engelaar starting on the bench. PSV started brightly and after a few minutes´ play Toivonen, who led the attack at the expense of Koevermans, sent a looping header just over the bar. PSV took the lead with just six minutes gone. Dzsudzsák swept in a fine cross and Toivonen fired a one-tome left-footed shot into Vorm´s top-right corner to register his eleventh goal of the campaign. PSV were in control and Afellay almost doubled their lead with a long-range effort. As the first half wore on, the game became more scrappy and PSV failed to keep up the pressure. The visitors had chances on the counter attack and were back on level terms on the stroke of half time when Keller headed home an Asare free kick: 1-1.
Engelaar opened scoring account for PSV
PSV burst out of the blocks after the restart. Manolev and Lazovic had chances but they lacked the finishing touch. The introduction of Engelaar for Simons gave PSV fresh impetus. Three minutes after he had come on as a substitute, the midfielder played a lovely one-two with Bakkal and opened his scoring account for PSV with a superb, clinical finish on the hour mark: 2-1. Keller was close with a glancing header, but the defender again drew attention to himself in the 77th minute when he clumsily collided into Isaksson. He was shown a second yellow card and got his marching orders. Manolev was booked and will miss PSV´s next game, against ADO Den Haag. The Bulgarian burst down the right flank and was hacked down by keeper Vorm. PSV appealed for a penalty but referee Van Hulten ignored their claims. Ten-man FC Utrecht could not come back into the game, as PSV took all three points to stay top of the table. They will be next in action on Saturday, when they host ADO Den Haag, who suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of FC Groningen.
Orlando Engelaar celebrates scoring PSV´s second goal with his team mates.
