Just like in the build-up to Euro 1988, Netherlands suffered a defeat against Bulgaria in an international friendly. Mitsanski scored a stoppage time winner to secure a 2-1 win for the visitors. Mark van Bommel and Jetro Willems were included in the starting line-up, while Stanislav Manolev played the full 90 minutes for Bulgaria.

On the stroke of half-time, Wesley Sneijder chipped a delicate pass over the Bulgarian defence and Robin van Persie coolly placed his left-footed shot past the goalkeeper: 1-0. The second half continued in much the same vein as the first, but the visitors, managed by Lyuboslav Penev, soon restored parity. A cross from the right hit Rafael van der Vaart on his arm and referee Fernando Teixeira Vitienes awarded a harsh penalty. Captain Ivelin Popov stepped up to comfortably convert the spot kick:1-1. Substitute Iliyan Mitsanski scored a stoppage time winner. John Heitinga had a poor lateral pass intercepted by Stanislav Manolev, who sent in a perfect cross for Mitsanski to head home at the far post: 1-2. Kevin Strootman was a substitute not used, while Wilfred Bouma replaced Joris Mathijsen, who had picked up an injury, after 15 minutes. Oranje will continue their Euro 2012 preparations on Wednesday, May 29, when they take on Slovakia at the Rotterdam Kuip. They will face Northern Ireland at the Amsterdam Arena on Saturday, June 2.
