‘There’s too much competition’
PSV confirmed on 7 February 2009 they had completed a loan deal with the Chinese Haibin Zhou, the second player to wear a PSV shirt. Xiang Sun was the first Chinese player who signed a contract with PSV. He was also the first Chinese to make an appearance for PSV in the UEFA Champions League. Haibin Zhou never made it into the first team, but made football history during a pre-season friendly: he was the first Chinese to score a goal for PSV. He did not make a first-team appearance in an official match and mainly featured for the reserves. PSV announced at the beginning of October that they would not exercise the option to extend the contract with the Chinese player. “He is a fine player and shows great work ethic, but there's too much competition for a spot in the starting line-up for him”, said head coach Fred Rutten. Haibin Zhou has meanwhile returned to his home land. We wish him all the best in his future career.
