Fred Rutten once again explained how important it is to have a large squad to work with. At the post-match press conference the PSV head coach said he was pleased after his team had beaten AZ 1-0 at the Philips Stadium and added: “We put in a solid and mature performance. This team has grown and a game like this shows just that. We can improve if the players continue to act as a team”, he said. Newly-appointed AZ boss Dick Advocaat thought PSV had deserved their win but claimed the home side had to give their all to snatch a late victory.

Rutten: “We have a large squad”

“We were easily the better side”, said Fred Rutten at the post-match press conference. “We put in a solid defensive display against good strikers. AZ had only once chance, while we kept our composure and kept going. We have a large squad and the substitutions eventually paid off. Ola Toivonen will be named man of the match, but we can improve if the players continue to act as a team. We have great team spirit and the way the substitutes responded to the goal speaks volumes”, concluded Rutten.

Advocaat: “PSV deserved their win”

Dick Advocaat´s brief return to the stadium where he worked in the nineties of the former century attracted media interest. The new AZ coach felt at home as he also answered questions from Belgian reporters. “It’s good to be back here but it is disappointing to give away a goal so late in the game. PSV deserved their win. AZ put in a spirited display against a determined and well-organised PSV team. We defended stubbornly but paid the price for having El Hamdaoui sent off in the 70th minute. It’s a shame we conceded yet another late goal. But we are going to win games soon if we show the same strong mentality. PSV deserved their win but had to give their all to snatch a late victory”, said Advocaat.
