Björn Kuipers appointed Johan Cruijff Shield referee

The KNVB have confirmed that Björn Kuipers will referee the Johan Cruijff Shield between KNVB Cup winners PSV and champions Ajax. The opening game of the new season, played for the seventeenth time, is scheduled to take place at the Amsterdam ArenA on Sunday, August 5th, with a traditional 18.00 kick-off time.

The second time

Referee Björn Kuipers has been selected to officiate at the match and his team in Amsterdam will include Sander van Roekel and Erwin Zeinstra operating as assistant referees, with Richard Liesveld the fourth official. It will be the second time that Kuipers, 39, will take charge of the Johan Cruijff Shield. He officiated the match between AZ and sc Heerenveen on 25 July 2009, when champions AZ recorded a 5-1 victory over Cup winners sc Heerenveen. Kuipers oversaw two Euro 2012 group stage games, between the Republic of Ireland and Croatia and between Ukraine and France. At the start of the 2011/12 season FC Twente beat Ajax to win the Cruijff Shield. PSV last won the Dutch Super Cup in 2008. Sunday’s match is sold out.
