Afellay came on as a substitute in Holland’s 0-0 draw

Italy and Netherlands played out a dull goalless draw in an international friendly in Pescara on Saturday. Ibrahim Afellay came on as a substitute fifteen minutes from time. Orlando Engelaar, a second PSV player in Bert van Marwijk’s squad, was a substitute not used. The two teams made many mistakes in a poor display.

In the 81ste minute, Italy striker Giampaolo Pazzini had a goal ruled out for handball. He turned in a cross with an outstretched arm and the Swiss referee Claudio Circhetta only gave a free kick after Dutch players asked him to consult his assistant. Van Persie was stretchered off after twelve minutes after he had damaged his ankle in a challenge with Giorgio Chiellini, who attempted to block Van Persie´s shot. After the match, it was confirmed that the Arsenal striker has torn his ankle ligaments and could be facing around two months on the sidelines.
