PSV got off to a bad start of 2013, the year in which they celebrate their 100th anniversary.

PSV started the first game of the new year with a poor performance and were punished in the 25th minute for sloppy defending. Forward Wiljan Pluim wriggled his way past a few PSV defenders before he found Fred Benson, who finished well: 0-1. PSV upped a gear and Tim Matavz scored the equaliser four minutes before half-time. Dries Mertens delivered a fine cross form the left and the Slovenian striker diverted the ball into the goal to take his tally to nine Eredivisie goals for the season and eighteen in all competitions.

Mertens and Strootman watched in disbelief as another big chance went begging.

Pieters sent off

PSV did not improve after the break but kept on making mistakes in a poor display. Benson, left completely unmarked, capitalised by tapping home Pluim's header 1-2. PSV failed to convert a number of big chances, while Wiljan Pluim added a third goal in the 63rd minute, hitting PSV on the break. Things went from bad to worse when Erik Pieters was sent off four minutes later for a late challenge on Fred Benson as PSV crashed to defeat. They will be next in action next week Saturday when they face Heracles Almelo in an away game.
